A lot of yards look fine on the surface until the rain hits and you realize the water has nowhere to go. Low spots pool up, soil erodes, and whatever you try to grow in there just struggles. The real fix isn't topsoil thrown on top - it starts with getting the grade right from the beginning.
Here's what we were working with on this one: a rough, overgrown area with uneven ground, weeds taking over, and no real drainage to speak of. The kind of spot that's been an eyesore for a while and just keeps getting worse. Before any seed, sod, or landscaping can do its job, the ground underneath has to be prepared properly.
We brought in the equipment and got to work clearing and grading the area. You can see the difference between where we started and where the ground ended up - flat, clean, and ready. A large fill load was delivered and worked into the site to build up the grade and make sure water would move away from the structure instead of sitting against it. That part matters more than most people realize. Poor grading near a home can cause drainage issues that show up in your basement or crawl space long before you ever see standing water in the yard.
Light excavation work like this is what sets up everything else. Whether you're planning to seed, lay sod, build a patio, or just want a usable outdoor space - none of it performs well on ground that wasn't properly graded first. Getting the foundation right is the step most people skip, and it's usually the reason their lawn or landscaping never quite looks the way they hoped.
We do this kind of work regularly and it's honestly one of the most satisfying jobs to complete. You go from a rough, problem area to clean ground with good drainage and a blank slate for whatever comes next. If you've got a section of your yard that's been giving you headaches, it might be a simpler fix than you think.
