This one's still in progress, but we wanted to share a look at where things stand. We're building out a fieldstone wall along a driveway entry, and the wall is really starting to take shape. Every stone gets placed by hand - no shortcuts, no filler.
Fieldstone work is one of those things that looks simple from the outside but takes a real eye for it. You're fitting irregular shapes together so they lock tight and sit level. Too much weight in the wrong spot and you've got a problem down the road. That's why we take our time with each course.
We brought in equipment to help move and position the larger stones - some of these boulders aren't exactly light. That's where our light excavation work ties directly into the hardscaping side of things. Getting the ground prepped right before the first stone goes down is half the battle. If the base isn't solid, nothing above it will be either.
A well-built fieldstone wall does a few things at once. It holds back soil, defines the edge of a space, and adds a look that fits the New England landscape better than just about anything else. These walls aren't going anywhere - built right, they last for generations.
We're in the final stretch on this one and can't wait to show you the finished result. The character these walls bring to a property is hard to put into words - but the finished photos will do the talking.
